Alpaca Walking

Cotswold Alpaca Walking Experience

Our Alpaca Walking Experiences at Hammonds Farm, Stroud,  will run from June through to October 2018 (when we will decide whether to continue the walks through the winter).

Alpacas are South American camels and are fascinating animals.  They are similar to, and often confused with the llama. However, alpacas are often noticeably smaller than llamas. With a gorgeous soft fluffy fleece. They have a very kind nature and are deeply intrigued by everything that we humans may be doing and keep surprising us by what they get up to.  Their babies  (known as “cria”) are spectacular.

Alpaca Walking - What to Expect

Our alpaca walks will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays, starting at 11.30am and lasting around 60 minutes. The maximum number of alpacas being walked at the same time will be limited to 8. For a group of five or more friends/relatives wanting to walk the alpacas, we we are able to arrange a walk at a time that suits you.

Before the walk starts, you will be able to choose your alpaca and start getting acquainted with each other.  We will explain the many ways in which alpacas differ from other animals and show you some techniques for making your alpaca walk go smoothly.

We will then take you for a 30 – 45 minute walk with one of the home team in the lead. Alpacas do not walk very quickly,  and there will be several pauses for lots of selfies,  questions and chat. All the walking will be across fields or on grass paths within the boundaries of the farm.

Please bring suitable outdoor clothing and, in particular, sturdy footwear or gumboots.
